Christopher Owens, a founding member of the seminal indie rockband Girls, has led a life marked by both extraordinary highs and profound lows. Growing up in the notorious Children of God cult, Owens spent much of his life distancing himself from religious narratives, dismissing them as paranoia, pretense, and propaganda. Yet, in 2017, he began to find relatable truths within those stories. After a decade of relentlesswork, Owens decided to step back, planning to get married and become a stay-at-home dad–until a severe motorcycle accident changed everything, leaving him immobilized forover a month. During his early recovery, his fiancé of seven years broke up with him, and the lengthy recovery cost him his job. Rumors swirled, and none of his friends visited, assuming the worst about the reasons behind his misfortunes.
