LARK's 15th anniversary: Celebrating 15 years of rhythm and resonance

LARK will be celebrating its 15th anniversary this year with a series of concerts, culminating in a big blowout on September 13th 2025, acknowledging the community and the spirit that gave rise to LARK. From hosting the first Down by the River (on ice) back in 2010 to the versatile harp virtuoso Sissi Rada in November 2025, LARK has navigated fifteen years of a changing cultural landscape in Berlin.

Back in 2010 the space was known as Marie-Antoinette. The room was stark and white, from the walls to the bar. The music was focused on indie rock, experimental and lo-fi bands, many of whom have since gone on to commercial success (Kevin Morby and the Babies, Mac DeMarco, Molly Nilsson, Space Lady, Sean Nicholas Savage, Fenster, Jaakko Eino Kalevi to name a few).

Alongside this, many wild parties (from legends such as Baile Trama and Trans Fag Dyke) and private events kept the venue busy from dusk until dawn.

With the venue's diverse offering and growing popularity with artists and audiences, the space has continuously adapted to the community's needs. From no running water behind the bar and no fixed stage or sound system in 2010, to the addition of a custom build stage in 2013, a lighting rig installed in 2020, and a huge leap in audio quality with the Danley Sound Labs system in 2022, LARK has always sought to best meet the requirements of those using the space.

Beyond the tech, LARK has also been committed to Berlin's local music community in the toughest of times - through initiatives such as providing multi-day stage rehearsals for bands and streaming live sessions online during COVID.

While there hasn't always been a clear way forward, and in a moment where small music venues are under more pressure than ever, LARK's mission remains the same - to provide a safe, creative and inclusive space for artists and audiences.

Growing together with this community has been a privilege and a pleasure.

As we celebrate 15 years of people coming through our doors, we're deeply grateful for the support and dedication of our crowd. We're marking this significant milestone in our history with a series of concerts, and the celebration will peak on September 13th 2025.

“Here's to 15 years of Berlin's thriving music scene at LARK, and to many more ahead.”

Anniversary Programme

2010-2025

2010 Marie-Antoinette opens with a show by Naked On The Vague, a two-piece girl-boy act out of Sydney. The stage stands in front of the Spree windows; the bar is where today's cloakroom and backstage sit. No running water behind the bar (!). We set up and tear down the entire PA and stage for each concert. The room is pure white, with minimal lighting.

2011 The stage is rotated to face the Spree, giving performers a view of the river. Sound and acoustic improvements begin.

2012 The stage moves to the current bar's location. We begin introducing sound-absorbing panels and push to enhance the live experience.

2013 The current stage is custom-built and permanently installed, along with the DJ booth. The bar is moved to its current spot (and finally gets a water tap!).

2014 The room is repainted in its now-signature dark Bordeaux red. Acoustic treatment and sound system are upgraded.

2016 More acoustic improvements and another sound system upgrade.

2018 Stage and bar renovations. A proper backstage is added.

2020 Covid — the space was turned into a rehearsal space for musicians and comedians.

2021 A major lighting rig is installed above the center of the room.

2022 We install our beloved Danley Sound Labs system — a massive leap in audio quality.

2023 We rename the space from Marie-Antoinette to LARK.

2024 A full commercial HVAC system is installed.

2026 (planned) Full restroom rebuild with more toilets, a new entrance sound barrier box, and soundproof windows to secure the future of live culture in our space.

“We can't wait to celebrate together with you. Keep coming, keep dancing, keep supporting your local scene. We're in it for the long run.””
