Tengger is a traveling musical family, made up of Pan-Asian couple, Itta (from South Korea) and Marqido (from Japan), who create their brand of psychedelic new-age drone magic through the use of voice, Indian harmonium, and toy instruments (played by Itta) and synths & electronics (played by Marqido).
The duo originally started out with the moniker “10” but since the birth of their son RAAI (who joins them on tour and playing voice, synth, toy instrument, dance performance on stage) in 2012, have called themselves Tengger (meaning ‘unlimited expanse of sky’ in Mongolian) to mark the expansion of the family. It also means ‘huge sea’ in Hungarian.
Travel, as spiritual experience in real environments, and the sound between the space and the audience have been central themes of their works. The family’s yearly pilgrimages inform every aspect of their art.
Pitchfork: “From field recordings to Krautrock to something they call ‘aural hang-gliding’, Tengger have truly begun to put their stamp on psychedelic music.”
Uncut Magazine: “There’s a level of detail in Tengger ‘s music that sets them apart from other drone artists, sounds nimbly woven together rather than painted in broad brushstrokes.”
Bandcamp Daily: “…like stepping through a glowing portal and gasping at the wonders of another world”
Stereogum: “Their shimmering synthesizers and reverberant chants invoke the most ethereal end of krautrock…”
Spiritczualic Enhancement Center:
As the self-appointed con-artists of the ”Jazz Circus”, the press has often referred in their context to the visions of Sun Ra, Electric Miles and Can – with whom’s recently departed legendary singer Damo Suzuki they released his very last album “Arkaoda” (which both Bandcamp Daily & Uncut magazine placed on the shelf right alongside “Future Days”). Carpet Album – their 2021 LP received a 9/10 from Future Music magazine and was said by ArtsDesk to “give mad-jazz labels.. a run for their money”.
Spiritczualic (hard ”tch”), their esoteric word-melange of ritualism and spiritualism, reflects a fluid and synchronous auto-composed music philosophy. Since their formation in 2017, they have been gathering outernational troupes of exploratory Third Eye instrumentalists from all over the Fourth World. The band has played on prestigious radio shows and has released 4 vinyl LPs and two cassettes — with yet another tape on Crash Symbols (Morgantown, USA) expected by the end of the year, titled “The Deep Sleep of Evil Men”.
